In the beginning, the Universe was the playground of the Gods. They were newborn beings blessed with a power that none of them could fully understand and, together, they created the contents of the Universe, each planet and star becoming a test of their powers and abilities. There were only a minority of these planets that could support life, in a variety of different forms, and each of these sentient races found a belief in religion, creating legends and believing in Gods that were not quite the real thing, but close enough to it. This humoured the Gods in question, and quite often they would walk upon the planet of their choice in a mortal disguise, almost as if mocking the planet’s sentient races for their foolish (but nearly correct) beliefs.
However, there was one planet, as there always has to be, that got it right.
There were twelve Goddesses that descended from the heavens and chose to walk amongst the mortals of Thera, a planet close in design to that of Earth. They were known as Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio and Sagittarius singularly, collectively known as the Zodiac Goddesses. They were reborn on the Earth as orphans, although without any parents, and were taken in by the priests of the Zodiac belief. At the age of thirteen, the twelve came of age, showing unusual powers, a change of appearance, and possessing a gemstone of their month and sign in their wrist. Their familiars – small wisps of glowing light, the colour of their gemstones, that were always a part of the twelve – separated themselves from being part of the twelve into physical manifestations, able to take the form of any animal, all twelve of them male as opposed to the female gender of the Goddesses.
For a while, they lived under the roof of the Zodiac Temple, making public appearances and helping out the people of their planet. During their teenage years, the priests that looked after the Goddesses became more and more cunning, setting plans of manipulation into place. As the Goddesses became older, passing into adulthood, they realised what the plans were and, rather than face a life of manipulation, set about attempting to thwart the plans of the priests. However, despite their powers, the Head Priest was a cunning and ruthless figure, and he devised a way of ‘killing’ the Goddesses – although they were not truly dead, but returned to the heavens, in an unconscious state of mind. However, their familiars managed to cling on, knowing that their mistresses would return eventually. When the priests found that there were no reborn orphan children, they instead went out and chose the most suitable candidates from the villagers, manipulating them and faking their powers and unnatural appearance.
For years, the priests have manipulated the world into their control, using fake Goddesses to control the minds of the public. However, the time for twelve new girls to be picked has come, and little do the priests or the girls know, the ones that they have this time are the real Goddesses reincarnated…
