When the world was still young, the gods had created many creatures to set upon Thera. Some were humanoid in appearance, similar to the gods themselves and some were a little more strange. These beings were meant to live together in peace, and thus needed a way to communicate with each other. The inhuman beasts were all given telepathic powers to allow them to speak to their humanoid brothers. Although all have this ability, they are very different from each other.
Unicorn
Unicorns are beasts that take the form of beautiful white horses with a single shining horn in the middle of their forehead. These horns give them magical abilities for healing. Unicorns are not immortal, but their healing abilities allow them to live very long lives spanning thousands of years. To kill a unicorn is a horrendous crime. Unicorns are not known to be particularly violent, but they don’t make good steeds. Very few people can claim they own a domesticated unicorn. Unicorns’ horns are usually golden in appearance, but there are some cases that report silver horns. Very rare breeds of unicorn can have horns of gem or glass.
Pegasus
Pegasi are very beautiful winged steeds. They are not as beautiful as unicorns, but they rival regular horses by a longshot. Pegai can come in any color natural to horse. Very rarely they may present an unnatural coloring. Besides telepathy don’t have any real powers. They make up for this by their amazing abilities of flight. Pegasi are easily domesticated and often used by the very rich. Pegasi should not be treated like any ordinary horse though. They are very intelligent creatures. They live to be about two-hundred years old.
Unisus
Unisi are the offspring of a unicorn and pegasus pairing. They are not nearly as beautiful as pure-blood unicorns. Their coat is usually white, but it is often to find splotches of other colors from the pegasus DNA. They have the wings of a pegasus and the horn of a unicorn, but their healing abilities are very diluted and they will never be as graceful in the air as a pure-blood pegasus. Their healing abilities will allow them a longer life, but they lack the ability to use their powers for someone else’s benefit.
Griffon
Griffons are large and terrible beasts. The back half of them is the body of a great golden lion, with a lion’s hind legs and tail. The front portion is that of a golden eagle , with a feathered head and shoulders. Great wings spread from their backs. The front paws are the talons of a great bird. They have strong beaks and golden cat-eyes. They have the ears of a lion, but elongated and feathered. Griffons are wise and powerful, but carry no magical abilities outside of telepathy. Griffons lay eggs.
Sphinx
Sphinxes are tricksters who specialize in riddles. They appear as humanoids with a lions body, eagles wings and the head of a human. They have the ability to warp dimensions and create illusions. How great these powers are depends on how old the creature is. Unless slain by a weapon, these creatures can live indefinitely. Sphinx give birth to one child every thousand years.
Phoenix
Phoenixes are great birds of brilliant red and gold plumage. They have the ability to set themselves on fire. Though this seems to be a self-defeating ability, but they also have the ability to shed their feathers and make them explode into flame, even when they are not in contact with them. Every thousand years it sets itself on fire and allows its body to be consumed. A new phoenix is reborn from the dead parent’s ashes. This is the only mean for them to “give birth.” If they are killed, they will not return.
Dragon
Dragons come in all shapes, sizes and colors. They usually take the form of a great lizard with horns and a pair of bat-like wings. Dragons are known for hoarding treasures and eating livestock. It is not true that they can breath and/or control fire. This is actually an ability of Salamanders (fire Nymphs). They lay eggs and are extremely cunning. They are territorial and rarely they can be tamed by humans. Humans who ride dragon are called dragoons.
